Queen's Birthday Training block
With less than a month to the start of the Tour de France, training continued unabated. A four day endurance training block was scheduled starting on the Friday of Queen's Birthday weekend. A dire weather forecast for the Sunday and Monday did not make this look appealing.
Friday was a pleasant riding day and I started the block by riding 125.1km in 5hrs 11m and climbing 2,019m including a Te Mata Peak climb.
The training schedule for Saturday was up and down hills so I completed eight times up and down Te Mata Peak. Including the getting there and home, this made it a 115.2km ride in 5hrs 52m with 3,254m of climbing.
Sunday morning dawned damp and cool but was much drier than expected as I rode for 168.2km in 7hrs 16m and climbed 2,547m. This ride included a Te Mata Peak climb, Ocean Beach, Waimarama and Maraetotara.
Riding on Monday morning started off dry and then the rain set in with some torrential falls. Reaching the top of Te Mata Peak, I was above the lower cloud level. In Craggy Range Road, water was flowing like a river down the road. By the time I was nearing the end of my 116.8km, 5hr 11m ride with 1,481m of climbing, the rain started to abate and the sky began to clear.
After 23.5 hours riding over 525km and climbing 9,301m (higher than Everest at 8,848m) in the four days, the training block was completed and the legs were tired but still turning the pedals.
Full details of the routes ridden and hills climbed are on Strava.
